Series notes:
While working at the Alki Bathhouse Art Studios, I met a woman who had just moved to the area. She was a flight attendant for Alaska Airlines. She said she had been flying a lot and didn't have time for personal art, but had a lot of art supplies that she would like to donate to our programs. I was delighted and said that we love donations. She said she would be back the next week with the supplies. Before she left, she asked me if I beaded. I said that I did and that I enjoyed working with beads.
The following week she came back with boxes and containers of rubber stamps, ink pads, paints, decorative papers, jewelry-making tools and even some practically new art bins for us to use. Then she turned to me and handed me a heavy box, and said "These are for you." I opened it up and inside were tons of beads! I was amazed at how many different kinds of beads there were. Hundreds of beads, nicely organized and stored in tiny boxes. There were even unopened bead bags from a store in L.A. that I used to visit in the late eighties, called Berger Beads.
Over the next few months, I started the Beaded Heart series. While creating many of the hearts I realized one of the interesting things that can accidentally happen when you are gifted with another's supplies. What happens is you begin to work with a different color palette and have a new and fresh perspective on your art.
In 2006 I invited her to my first showing of the beaded hearts. Later we reconnected at my studio for another show. I still marvel at her generous donation and our kinship in art and bead appreciation.
